#102 – how to heal yourself (Shawn’s mold illness recovery story) + eating intuitively when meal prepping

There are certain things you can do to help yourself heal, besides just diet changes.  And today, we are looking at these other steps you can take to heal yourself.  This comes in attachment to Shawn’s mold illness recovery story.  She shares her insight as to what she did and changed about her life to get where she is today…the healthiest she has ever been.  It wasn’t just about taking medication or changing her diet.  It was SO much more than that and certain things that not many people are doing yet.  She adopted a ketogenic diet, changed her stress levels, moved homes, took supplements, BUT it was the changes she made to her mindset that really lead to healing.

We then move on to a listener question about eating intuitively when meal prepping food for an entire week.

  1. I really appreciated this. Shawn, when you said that the online groups dealing with mold illness are negative. I’d say that’s an understatement.

Here’s my story. I’m 27 years old, and I got sick with mold illness last fall. Before that, I was extremely healthy and active. I worked full time as a software developer, and trained Brazilian Jiu jitsu and Muay Thai 4-5 times a week. Then all of a sudden I got SO sick. I had severe shortness of breath, lightheadedness, heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, and neurological issues (anxiety, panic attacks). I was sick for about a month, and then my fiance discovered mold growing in the in-the-wall AC unit in our bedroom. Then it kind of clicked. I got sick about 1 week after moving our bed into such a position that I was right in front of the AC unit. I must have been getting a huge blast of mold toxins every night when I was sleeping.

Anyway, I’ve been working with my PCP to start the Shoemaker protocol. I’ve been slowly getting better, but I just recently found that I have MARCoNS in my sinuses. So I’m trying to address that at the moment.

But I could not agree with you more about the sites dealing with biotoxin illnesses. They’re full of desperate people who provide little hope. Your blog and this podcast are the ONLY things on the internet that I’ve found in the last 4-5 months that describes a true recovery story. So I thank you for posting your results.

How long did you end up being on VIP treatment? And did you notice a difference right away? I’m hoping to be in a position to take VIP in the next couple of months, and I’m really looking forward to the potential benefits.

    • Hi Doug! I’m so happy someone agrees with me on that! They are terrible. Glad you found my success story because I know you need to hear that recovery is entirely possible and will happen. I had Marcons too, but it doesn’t take too long to get rid of, so don’t worry. After that, you’ll be able to do VIP. I was on it for 6 months and ended up at almost double the normal dose, but it does work. It’s not immediate though. I have to tell you, the best thing I did for myself was start a ketogenic diet and get into ketosis. That immediately resolved my neurological issues and fatigue. So much so, that my mold specific doctor has now added it to his practice!

      • Very interesting. I already eat a pretty healthy lower carb diet of mostly grass fed meat and vegetables. I practice intermittent fasting (with bulletproof coffee), but I do consume starches (in the form of potatoes and white rice usually) so I’m not on a true ketogenic diet. I will have to give sustained ketosis a shot.

However, currently, I’m taking Cholestyramine which I’m sure you did as well. The traditional stuff has sugar in it, so I wouldn’t be able to sustain ketosis when taking that stuff 4 times a day. How were you able to get around this? Did you take pure CSM from a compounding pharmacy? If so was it expensive?

        Thanks,
        -Doug

        • Hi Doug, I was actually ramping down my CSM while I was getting into ketosis, so it happened to work out well. I have a friend though that is in ketosis and taking 4 doses of the traditional, sugary stuff with no problem. It will just mean eating fewer actual carbs from food.
