All right, let’s move on to talking about podcasting. Honestly, I really cannot believe that this is the first episode I’ve ever done on podcasting. Because as I’m sure you all can probably guess, I am a huge, huge fan. Like I just think that podcasting is the best thing ever, for small business owners solopreneurs service based businesses, because you just can reach people in such an authentic and real way and establish that connection. that know like and trust that we talked about the past few episodes, I think we’ve talked about it, you can establish that so quickly in the format of a podcast, because you are just hanging out in people’s earbuds as they’re taking a walk or working out or making dinner, or you know, you’re in the car with them as they’re on their way to work like that is some powerful stuff. And you have the ability to do that with a very low budget, like it does not take much money, or even much time to start a podcast. So that’s what we’re going to talk about today. I hope to answer a lot of the questions that you have about starting a podcast. But if you have more after this episode airs, be sure to send them to me I get all of my questions over on Instagram at unstuck entrepreneur over there. That’s where I collect them. And then I can do another podcast episode in the future answering those specific ones. But I will tell you that over the past few years, probably five years at this point. I have gotten so so many questions about podcasting, even before I was ever a business coach or ever even had let on that I liked talking about business like back in the day when I was like, full on nutritionist like don’t talk to me about anything else, but health related stuff. I was getting questions all the time from people who wanted to start a podcast and asking how to do that. So I should have known back then that I was going to someday be recording a podcast about podcasting.
As a business coach, I feel like that was my first sign that it would happen someday. And for those of you that don’t know my podcasting history, I and I feel like I’ve shared this recently on the show. So if I have just, you know, skip ahead, but I started my very first podcast seven years ago, almost exactly seven years ago, with my friend mag, we called it the nurse podcast, it was amazing. That was back in February of 2015. And then in June of 2017. So a little over two years later, I launched my first solo podcast, which was called the Keto for women show a lot of you know of it, it’s still out there in the ethers of the web somewhere, if you want to listen to it, but I haven’t recorded a new episode in like, over two years. But anyway, I launched that podcast and so for a few months there, I was doing both shows, I was doing the nourish podcast with mag and then putting out my own solo podcast episodes on the Keto for women show. So two episodes per week for at least a few months. I don’t remember the overlap. But it was a while because I remember kind of feeling like I was always podcasting. And then in September of 2019, I launched this podcast I was originally called unstuck recently had a little name change to become unstuck entrepreneur. And again for about two months, I was recording a podcast for unstuck. And then I was recording a podcast episode for keto for women show. So even more overlap there, which all this to say first of all, as you can see, I love podcasts. Second of all, I’ve done a lot of podcasting over the years. I think it adds up to be over 400 podcast episodes that I have done in my lifetime, which is crazy. And that has now at this point they’ve racked up over five million podcast downloads, I’ve lost count, after I got to 5 million I just said, I’m just gonna say over 5 million. I don’t want to continue to have to calculate all of this.
But it’s a lot and continues to grow, obviously. And I’m just super, super proud of that, first of all, all of the episodes, all the research, all the work that’s involved, and the people that I have been able to connect with, because of these little podcast, what I also want, that I hope you can see that I want you to know is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. And people actually really love imperfect podcasts, because it’s just like we’re talking, it is you and I having a conversation, it just happens to be that I’m on a tangent right now. So I’m talking a lot, and you’re just listening. But it could be like we were having coffee, or out on a walk together. And I’m just on a rampage, talking about something really important to me. And you’re there listening, and maybe taking notes and seeing how that relates to you and your life and learning something along the way. And that’s really the important point about how to approach your podcast, that will really make it stand out to the right people is just really finding that place that you can just be yourself and be authentic, and share what you want to share and don’t feel like you can’t mess up or you can’t say the wrong thing. Or you can’t go off on tangents and not follow your script. All of that is what people love. It’s what makes you real. It’s what makes you relatable. And it makes the right people find you and connect with you and be magnetized to your podcast. And so all of that is really what I wanted to say is like, I got 5 million podcast downloads over seven years. And I’ve also been doing this for seven years, and I still mess up all the time, I’m not even remotely a perfect podcaster I never will be I don’t want to be, I think that you guys can tell that I just kind of go off and start talking about things. I mess up all the time. That’s why I have an editor. And that’s why one of the great things about podcasting is it is fully editable. So if you really mess up just resave that sentence, and then edit it out, it’s completely fine. Or if you say um, or like too many times, edit it out, and it will flow just like normal. It really is so easy. It is not like doing some sort of live talk or live video or anything like that, where if you mess up, you just mess up, which is also fine. But one of the great things about podcasting is it is free to just be yourself, do whatever mess up, edit it out, if it would make you feel more comfortable or don’t because no one really usually cares. And just go with it. And don’t feel like you have to be perfect. Or you have to even be this like Master podcaster before you can start getting downloads and reaching a large audience, because you don’t have to. And I am proof of that.
All right, so that was one of the many tangents that I will probably go on in this episode, because as you can see, I’m just really super passionate about using this as a tool in your business. And I chose to talk about it today on this episode, because we’ve now moved on to the second pillar of the flow and grow framework, which is the Attract pillar. As a reminder, we have five pillars to the flow and growth framework, define, attract, build, invite, and transform. We went through define last week when we talked about defining your dream client, AKA your niche or niche or ideal customer. And then now we move on to the Attract pillar, which is to attract your dream client to your work. client attraction is 100%, not 85%, not 95% 100%, about putting yourself and your work out there. Because if you don’t, then no one knows you exist. No one knows what you do. No one knows that you have a business, no one knows that you can help them. And clearly that’s going to be really hard, if not impossible to grow your business if you don’t put yourself out there. And so this is the point of the holistic business starter, where we focus on you getting out of your own way, putting yourself and your work out there in a way that feels good to you. And those words are the most important. That feels good to you. Because if you start thinking, Okay, well now chances I have to have a podcast or I have to have a YouTube channel. I have to have a blog, which I don’t say you have to do any of that, FYI. But if you start thinking in that way, then you do something that doesn’t actually feel good to you that you don’t actually really love doing. And guess what, that blog is not gonna go anywhere, you are not going to commit to doing it as often as you should, because you don’t like it. And the whole reason we’re in business, one of the many reasons is to do things, we love to help the people, we want to help to have more free time and flexibility in our lives and actually enjoy what we’re doing the majority of the hours of the day, which is our work. And so if you hate writing, then you shouldn’t be a blogger, and you shouldn’t have blog posts. If you don’t like being on camera, then YouTube is probably not a great idea. And so we have all these tools that we can potentially use, and you have to find the one that feels good to you. Now, in holistic business starter, everyone chooses a tool that they use as their point of attraction. And then you do the work together with all of the resources that I have available, and the group support and everything like that to implement meant that tool in your business.
So some of them I already mentioned, your tool can be a blog, a YouTube channel, could be a podcast, obviously can be conferences, summits, workshops, there are lots of different options, but they all have one thing in common, which is that it is you putting your work out into the world. The one caveat that I have for this is that it cannot be social media, social media is not a reliable tool for business growth. Now, can I grow your business? Absolutely. Can it be something that you use, in addition to your tool, 100% definitely do that. But it is something that is kind of the cherry on top to the other tools you’re already using. And that is what we do inside holistic business starter, is really focused on building up that tool that is a reliable business growth mechanism that you have way more control over, for example, there is no algorithm that is going to decide whether you see this episode that I just put out or not, you get to go into your app, you get to see all the episodes available, you get to download the ones that look good to you. There is no blocker, no algorithm, no computer who decides who sees what and who doesn’t. And, you know, I think we all know about the algorithm and what it does. There’s nothing wrong with that. But that’s the business model of Instagram. That is not the case for you know, Apple podcasts, for example. So that is why we need something that is more reliable, and then using social media as the cherry on top. So we need a tool. And to be honest, most people in holistic business starter which used to be unstuck entrepreneur, choose a podcast, there have been so many amazing podcasts that have been launched in the past year and a half, just incredible podcasts that these business owners have put out just doing incredible work. So proud of all of them. And so I thought today on this podcast, we could talk about this tool, and I’ll give you some tips to get started with your own. First our quote for the day, be loud about the things that are important to you, by Karen Walrond be loud about the things that are important to you.
I would bet that what you do in your business, who you help and how you help them is important to you. You have a passion around it, you have a purpose to share it. And so that is something that you need to be not only loud, but proud to share. And that is what a podcast can do for you. All right, why I love podcasts. Let’s start here. I think you guys probably already know a lot of these, but let’s just go over them. First of all, it is easy and super affordable to get started. Which sounds crazy because a lot of people have this blog without even doing any research or without even knowing they just think that it is hard to start a podcast like you need all this equipment. You need all these software, you need to you know pay a bunch of money to have it hosted. There’s a lot of talk without even doing any research to find out that that’s actually not the case. It is super affordable. Yes, you do need a mic. That is one thing that you cannot scrimp on at this point is your sound quality because there are obviously a ton of podcasts out there like so. So so many podcasts out there, which doesn’t matter in terms of it being saturated or anything like that not not a problem doesn’t matter. But that does mean people are used to listening to podcasts, they have definitely listened to one that is highly produced, which you do not have to do. But they’re used to good quality audio. And then if your podcast comes up, and you’re like using your old earbud microphone, then that’s going to be obvious and they will move on. So good quality audio is important. And fun fact, seven years ago, when Meg and I started our podcast, we used our Apple earbuds mic, as our microphone didn’t matter. It did not matter at that point, because podcasts were rare. There wasn’t that many out there. And so no one knew that there should be anything different. I mean, we eventually upgraded probably a year in to actual microphones, but didn’t matter at that point. Now, it does. So yes, you need to get a good microphone. Notice I did not say an expensive microphone, you can get a great microphone for like maybe 50 bucks ish. That was the one that I started with that I used up until maybe two years ago, such a good microphone, it was an Audio Technica. So you can search for that and see what you come up with.
But other than that, you can use the software that is built in to your computer. Most likely, if you have an Apple computer, then you have GarageBand, which is what I use to record, if you’re doing something where there’s two of you, like you have a co host or you interview guests, then you can use Zoom and record the audio of zoom. There’s also audacity, which I believe is free as well, you just download that to your computer, and all of these record. And then you know, like in GarageBand. That’s also where you can edit. So one and done. Then you download it to your computer, and then login to your host your podcast host which some of them I know they do have some free ones, there are some that are the rest of really are minimal monthly payments, not a big deal at all. and upload it there. That is where you would set everything up, you write your caption, all that stuff, and schedule it to release. And that’s it, then you have a podcast. So it is easy and super affordable to get started. As you can see, the next thing why I love podcasts, they are a great way to get people to know like and trust you quickly. Like I’ve mentioned already a few times in this episode, probably the best reason why I love podcasts is because of this. What better way for someone to get to know you and the work you do and what you’re passionate about and how you can help them than to just talk to them, just talk to them. While they’re like I said on a walk or cooking dinner or whatever, just have a conversation and share what you know, and be open to helping them give some valuable content. And do so in a way that is authentic to you show off your personality, and really just be You, my gosh, is there a better way to build know like and trust, it is not the same in a blog post, for example, because it’s just takes longer. It’s not that you can’t do it. But it takes longer for someone to really get to know you and your personality, because there has to be based on reading, you know, based just on words and what they read. And if they skim or not, if they really understand your personality and your humor by way of words, versus hearing someone talk and their actual inflection and when they laugh at themselves. And when they get serious. All of that adds to the quickness that someone can get to know like and trust you. So this really, like I mentioned my favorite way. So I’ve been doing it for so long, I will continue to do it. I love connecting with you guys in this way. And what it does, too is people get to know you here. I’ve heard this so many times, they feel like we’re friends, they feel like every week I just pop in and chat with them for a little bit. And I hear that so often. And then they come over and we actually have a conversation in the DMS of social media and really get to know each other back and forth that way.
So you really are building these lasting connections strictly because of your podcast. The third reason is that it is easy to share about your paid offers in an authentic way. So this is again, one of the few places where you can just talk openly about what you have coming up. As you know, I’ve been talking about the next round of holistic business starter happening soon and just openly sharing about that in a very non salesy non weird way just talking about it and you can do that in a podcast. In a way that just feels natural and comfortable for you. And that is what your listeners pick up on to. And then they’re able to get the information about something they might be interested in coming up that you have as a paid offer, and take the next step with you, which is very, very cool. And then the last reason, although I’m sure I didn’t capture them all, but the last reason why I love podcasts is that you can record from anywhere, wearing anything, you could be in your pajamas, you could not have showered for a week, you could be on the other side of the world, you could be cuddled up on your bed, I have taken my microphone all over the world and recorded episodes all over the world. And it is so fun to do that. And that is also something that you can do with a blog, which is great. But you can’t do that with a YouTube channel. I mean, you can definitely be traveling, you can be doing all that stuff. But you probably have to shower potentially, at least a few days before you record. So going a week without showering, you’d probably have to brush your hair, maybe you’d have to put on some makeup. And you don’t have to do that with a podcast and also with a blog, which is really nice. So now let’s talk about how to get started. I know that a lot of you listening because your holistic business starter members already have a podcast. So this may or may not apply to you.
But if you don’t have a podcast, and it’s something that you want to do, here are some ideas, ways to get started. First of all, you have to come up with an overall idea for your podcast, with your dream client in mind. So that is why last week we talked about defining your dream client, it is the central force of everything else you do in your business. So you really cannot do anything, you can’t put anything in place until you know that. So if you didn’t listen to that episode, head back there. And be sure to do that first and then move on to thinking about your podcast, you want to come up with with an overall idea or theme, you know, something that is very specific to your dream client and what they would need help with what they would like to see in a podcast. And once you have that figured out, then you can brainstorm your podcast topic ideas. And I would highly, highly recommend that you get a list of possible topics for your podcast episodes, like 25, I’d say at least, that gives you about half a year’s worth of podcast episodes that you can pull from if you ever get short on ideas. Now what happens here, it’s not that you actually will ever use those ideas. But it lets you know that you have a valid idea and gives you the security to know you’ll have something to talk about for at least six months. One of the biggest barriers to icy so many people have is they’re afraid they won’t have anything to talk about after three episodes. So really get a good list going to give you the comfort and security to know that you have a lot to talk about. Like I said, you probably won’t even use that list, I have the longest list going on both my phone and on my computer every time. Most of my ideas come when I’m out like walking in the dogs or on a hike.
So I have this on my phone and I just write down some ideas every time I have one. And so I have this bank, I can always go back to but quite often I don’t even need that because I know already what I want the next episode to be and then it kind of build off of that. So it’s really interesting how it works. But it’s a really good mindset to get into to have that security that you know, you have six months worth of podcast episodes. So like I said 25 ish possible topics for your podcast. And then after that, you just have to build your podcast setup. So like I said, you’re going to have the high quality audio in mind. So you’re going to have a microphone, you’re going to have a quiet space, you might need some soundproofing. If you’re in a big room that’s kind of empty, some people go into their closets, which is really awesome. That gives you some of the best audio possible because you’re obviously surrounded by clothes, and all of that absorbs any echo or reverberation. So that might be something to consider but just make sure you have a quiet space and test your audio so record something and listen to it back and see if you notice any tenderness or any echo. What can you do to soften that and really make sure you’re coming through clear. From there you have to get your tech setup. Again already mentioned you can use things like GarageBand audacity zoom. I’m sure there’s plenty of others out there if you want to Google more options, but figure out the whole tech side of it, how are you going to record? How are you going to add it? And then what are you going to use as your host, or who are you going to use as your host, again, something that you can Google, I personally use Libsyn. I have since day one, it’s great.
You can also if you have Kajabi, Kajabi, hosts podcasts. Now, you can use like pod bean, I think is another one, there’s a bunch of them. So it’s something you can look into and decide on the best one for yourself. And if you’re in holistic business starter, happy to help you out and the rest of the podcasters in there can share their experience too, with what they have loved to use in their podcast. So you have all that set up, everything’s set up, where you’re going to record the mic, you’re going to use to record you know that you sound good, you have your tech setup all ready to go, then you record a lot of people, especially when they’re starting out, write some detailed notes for each episode, before you record, I recommend doing that, that’s what I do, I have my kind of outline, and then just let it flow from there. So I can get into some just kind of authentic talk. But I have outline, so I don’t go too far off kilter, I make sure I can include everything, I don’t have too many tangents. And that’s really helpful too when you sit down to record. So you’re going to you know, write your notes, record your episode. And if you’re just starting out, I would recommend recording your first three episodes all at once. And then you submit those to the podcast platforms, the major podcast platforms, so you’ll upload them to your host your podcast hosting site, you will get an RSS feed, you will submit that RSS feed to Apple, Spotify, Google Stitcher, I think those are probably the main four. And then kind of all the other apps, the podcast apps that you might use to listen to, they all get the information pulled information from these like Apple, Google ones, the bigger ones. So you don’t have to worry about getting into every single podcast app, I don’t even think that’s possible, just make sure to get into the big ones. So you just submit your link to your shows. And then it can take anywhere from a couple days to a couple of weeks to get that approved, and they’ll start showing up. And that’s it. From there. Last step you tell everyone, tell everyone if you have a following already you are emailing them, you are talking about on social media, you are telling your friends, you are telling your family members, you are telling everyone, because even if your friends are not interested, they are not your dream client, they might know someone who is and they can recommend your podcast.
And that really is probably the biggest way to grow your podcast audience is by word of mouth by referral. So be sure to tell everyone even if it doesn’t impact them directly. Super duper important. And you will continue to tell everyone about every episode, you will write emails about it you will post and share on social media about it. You need to tell everyone all the time, so that hopefully it doesn’t sound too overwhelming and complicated. I promise. It really is simple. It is not a hard process at all. Really the biggest hurdle is to get over yourself and record. It is hard, you’re gonna say dumb things. You’re not gonna like the sound of your voice, you’re gonna mess up and forget words, you’re gonna fumble your words, you’re gonna say the wrong word. All of that is fine. We have so much built up in terms of our stories and our fears and our worries when it comes to podcasting. And when it comes to putting ourselves out in this new way that feels like a really big way. And that is what you have to get over. And that is the very first step obviously, really, the biggest step that we do together in holistic business starter is getting over the butt. Like if you are saying yes, I want a podcast but right now we need to get over that. And you need to understand that story understand where it’s coming from and reverse out of it because that but is just a false story. If you say I want to start a podcast, but I’m not ready. I want to start a podcast but I need another certification. First. I want to start a podcast but my audience isn’t big enough. I want to start a podcast but I don’t know what to say. That is the problem here. That is the hurdle, the biggest by far hurdle of starting a podcast. So of course if you have a goal of starting a podcast and using that as your tool which a reminder, everyone needs to have have a tool and you want more support, more guidance, more strategy on how to grow it. If you want these action steps really written out for you. So you make sure you don’t forget anything and you do it right, then I would be thrilled to help you start and grow your podcast inside holistic business starter, and you’ll have tons of support and encouragement and guidance from the other members too, that have all started their podcast. It also is a built in listenership.
Everyone that starts a podcast in holistic business starter, also listens to the other members podcasts. So you immediately have this group that is going to build your listenership and they are going to share about your podcast with their audience. And so it’s kind of this built in growth machine, when you are part of a supportive business group of like minded people, you have this built in community that was going to help you grow your business too, and you do the same for them.
