8 Business Tips For Wellness Entrepreneurs

This month marks nine years since I took the leap to become a wellness entrepreneur. Those years were full of lessons learned the hard way, and I now have TONS of tips to help fellow wellness entrepreneurs in their business.

I will never forget the day I decided to leave my safe, corporate job to build my own holistic health practice. I had no idea what that really meant or how it would look, but I did know one thing—there was no way I was ever going to work for someone else again. 

I think it’s safe to say that becoming an entrepreneur without any knowledge or experience is quite the rollercoaster ride! I can’t possibly sum up all of the incredible, and not-so-incredible, experiences I’ve had along the way, but I do have some tips that will help you on your journey to becoming a wellness entrepreneur.

Let’s count them down because countdowns are fun.

8 business tips for wellness entrepreneurs

 

Business Tip #8: Done is better than perfect.

When I first started my wellness business, I put out poorly-written blog posts (some of which still get the highest traffic on my site), created recipes that were actually pretty gross (haha!), and my Instagram pictures were downright embarrassing. 

My content was and still is far from perfect, but it has never once stopped my business from growing month after month, year after year.

Perfection doesn’t exist, especially when it comes to business and entrepreneurship. Try as much as you want, but you will inevitably have typos in your emails, broken links on your website, and Instagram posts that flop no matter how much time you spend trying to do everything right. 

You can breathe a sigh of relief though because…guess what? No one cares! 

Trying to do it all perfectly and waiting to put your work out there until it gets there is just procrastination in disguise. It’s coming from a fear of being judged or criticized, and it’s holding you and your business back in a massive way. 

The time you’re spending looking for perfection in your work could instead be spent connecting with those people who have found your imperfect work valuable (which they will) and inviting them into your world. Much more productive use of time, right?

 

Business Tip #7: Spending money on your business is an investment in yourself

Real talk: my business put me into debt. But also, that debt was the best thing I ever did for my future because it was an investment in my dream, my plans, my vision, and my mission. And, it had a massive return rate.

Don’t get me wrong, spending money I didn’t have at the time was scary, and I hesitated to do it. But, in the end, I intuitively knew it was a requirement if I wanted to grow and took that leap of faith.

I was right.

Within a matter of months, I had not only paid off that initial debt but had made back 10X the investment.

What did I invest in, you ask? A business mentor, an assistant to help me manage my client paperwork, a functioning computer, podcast equipment (that I still use to this day!), and, probably the biggest kick-in-the-pants investment of all, an online business management platform that encouraged me to start turning my business ideas into reality (ie. courses, group coaching, e-books, etc.).

Step into that abundance mindset and see the investments you make in your business as stepping stones that will bring with it the wealth and success you deserve. It will happen, but not if you’re trying to do it all without spending a dime.

 

Business Tip #6: Create, create, create…even when no one is watching.

Remember those terrible blog posts, inedible recipes, and embarrassing Instagram posts I mentioned earlier. Yeah, no one saw that content. They’re still out there on the interwebs somewhere waiting for someone to notice them. 

I remember hovering over the “publish” button of my first blog post with butterflies in my stomach. I was so nervous! But, I got up the courage to post it, and then nothing…and nothing…and still nothing. I think, to this day, my mom is the only one that ever read that first blog post.

But, I didn’t let that stop me. 

Since that first scary blog post, I’ve written countless more, recorded over 350 podcast episodes, posted over 2500 Instagram posts, created dozens of freebies, and even have a few YouTube videos out there. 

And, as I continued to create more and more content, more and more people started finding it, many of which became clients and customers. My business consistently grew as long as I stayed consistent with my content creation.

Especially at the beginning (and sometimes even years into it), people aren’t going to see your content. You’re not going to get a ton of “likes”, and you’re not going to have a lot of readers or listeners. 

That means absolutely nothing about you, your content, your abilities, your message, or your business. It just means that you’re in the process of building a business, something every entrepreneur has to go through at some point. 

Write when no one’s reading, talk when no one is listening, and post when no one’s responding, and pretty soon, people will be in the audience.

Business Tip #5: Get excited when you fail.

I can’t even begin to count the number of “failures” I’ve had in my business in the past 8 years. I put that big, bad F word in quotes because I really don’t believe in the negative connotation that society today has put on the word failure.

I personally get excited when something I do in my business doesn’t work the way I expected or hoped. Why? Because every single time I’ve failed, I’ve learned something invaluable from it. The failures I’ve had in my business have been THE reason for my success. Without those lessons, I wouldn’t have found what worked. 

Next time you fail (which you inevitably will), get excited! You’re learning an amazing lesson that will only take you one step closer to your inevitable success.

 

Business Tip #4: Focus on connections over followers.

When I first started my business, social media wasn’t nearly as life-engulfing as it is now. There wasn’t this obsession with vanity metrics such as likes, comments, and followers. I saw these apps as opportunities to make a real connection with people. Different ways I could intimately connect and communicate with my dream clients and let them know I get them, see them, and can help them.

Now, I see so many entrepreneurs get hung up on these numbers and think they need to have a certain “following” before they can be successful. That couldn’t be more untrue! 

Followers don’t create your business, connections do. Think about it, which would be better for your business? 100 potential dream clients that you authentically connected with regularly OR 10,000 followers that barely even know you? 

Choose connections over fans or followers. Use social media platforms to help build those connections and detach from the vanity metrics. Your business will skyrocket as a result.

 

Business Tip #3: It’s going to be scary, do it anyway.

Alright, now I’m going to really be totally honest with you. I’m scared to death of entrepreneurship. Yep, this is meant to be in the present tense. I still get scared to do things in my business almost every day. 

Which means I’m doing things absolutely RIGHT. Because if I weren’t scared, that would mean I wasn’t growing. I wasn’t trying new things, putting myself out there, and expanding into unknown territory. That’s what it takes to have a business. You can’t ever get stagnant or too comfortable with this gig.

What I will say is that I don’t even notice the fear anymore. Instead, it feels like scary excitement because I know it means great things are on their way.

So yes, I know quite well that none of this feels super comfortable to you right now. Stepping out of your comfort zone and putting yourself out into the world in a new way will have some fear attached to it. Please know that’s normal! 

But, you’ve still got to do it. You’ve got to push through that fear, get yourself out there, and go for it! You have a passion and purpose that led you here. Let those positive, uplifting emotions lead the way through the fear and discomfort. 

Business Tip #2: Don’t force it.

In 2016, I had a random intuitive nudge. I was going to take everything I had been saying over and over again to my 1:1 nutrition clients and put it into one spot on the internet so they could go through the content on their own time. 

I knew absolutely nothing about creating online courses at the time but dove headfirst into this idea, spending a few months creating my first course. One year after launching that course, it had made over $100,000 in sales. 

Again, no clue what I was doing or why I was doing it, just followed a nudge that felt like it was the right thing to do without second-guessing it. Ever since then, I have never, ever turned down a nudge from my intuition when it comes to a business idea, even when it meant pivoting multiple times in my business, turning down opportunities that looked good on paper, and working on projects that tested my patience and abilities.

The biggest and baddest tool you have as an entrepreneur is your own intuition.

Something I see trip new wellness entrepreneurs up the most is their inability to listen to and trust their own intuitive guidance. Instead, they look to outside influence to see what everyone else is doing, how they’re doing it, and what’s working.

They ask other people for advice and opinions, try to force or effort their way through what they “should” be doing, and never take the time to go inward to see what their own inner voice has to say.

Spend some time working to find that voice, and you will never again be confused about what direction to take in your business.

 

Business Tip #1: Successful entrepreneurs are made from the inside out.

This tip is absolutely, positively, my number one takeaway from 8 years of entrepreneurship. I’m so passionate about sharing this work with new business owners that it’s what I now spend my days teaching these lessons in my business mentorship program, Holistic Business Starter!

I learned this lesson the hard way. I spent 3.5 years in business massively struggling, unable to make ends meet because I wasn’t gaining traction. You might be wondering how that was possible when I just mentioned ALL the things I was doing right.  

There was just this one tiny (actually really huge) thing…I was unknowingly blocking my own success.

My subconscious programming was still that of a scared, broke girl that didn’t know what she was talking about, couldn’t help anyone, and didn’t deserve success. 

Without me even realizing it, I was still operating from this internal representation of myself because I hadn’t yet done the inner work required to be a successful entrepreneur.

Yes, there’s a lot of external “stuff” to do as an entrepreneur—setting up a website, printing business cards, creating content, etc.—but none of that matters if you haven’t prepared your internal world for this next-level version of yourself. You will still think, feel, and act like the old version of you.

This is the REAL work to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Please take a lesson from my experience and don’t wait until you are deep into your business and struggling to get started.

Why You’re Still Playing Small In Your Business

If you are someone in the wellness space—or really in any other space as an entrepreneur—your role is to help others to heal and be well. What an important and powerful purpose! You have been planted here on earth right now for that purpose, and not putting yourself out there to serve means that others are not getting the help that they need. As soon as you can be liberated from your own fear, you will automatically liberate others just by virtue of your presence.

There is a serious need in the world today for people who are ready to make an impact. Getting out of your own way is vital to stop playing small!

Why You’re Playing Small

Our deepest fear is not that we are weak. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ But, actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Many times, the reason for playing small is that your fear of starting a business is bigger than your passion for helping others. Maybe it feels confusing, overwhelming, or stressful to consider being an entrepreneur. And because that business piece feels so scary or foreign, you don’t do it; you continue to play small, stuck in your comfort zone.

What does it mean to be an Unstuck Entrepreneur?

An Unstuck Entrepreneur understands the mindset, energetic shift, and spirituality behind the workings of a successful business. They understand that it’s not all about gaining followers, setting up email lists, pricing services, etc. It’s SO MUCH MORE than that! It’s also about getting out of your own way by understanding your limiting beliefs and working through your fears. Taking a look at what’s underneath your inability to be successful thus far can show you exactly how to have the business of your dreams.

The Unstuck Entrepreneur also understands the impact that energy has on their success, their business, who their clients are, and more. The vibrational energy that you bring into your business plays a huge part in your success. Getting into alignment can change everything!

When you apply the tenets of becoming unstuck to the methods of starting a business, you open yourself up to building the business of your dreams and true success as an entrepreneur.

What Does Playing Small Look Like?

Let’s dig into the signs that you’re still playing small in your business.

Not living up to your potential.

You know when you’re not living up to your potential. You can feel it. When you recognize that you’re hiding, frozen, staying in your comfort zone, or not giving it all you’ve got, then you know you’re playing small.

Not realizing your dreams.

If you’re out there making a little money, but you’re not feeling the satisfaction of living your dream, then you’re playing small. If you’re not in your dream business, there’s more out there for you, and you’re playing small. There’s more that you desire that you’re not actively going after.

Not following your passions and purpose for this lifetime.

We all have passions and purposes in this world. If you’re not allowing yourself to express that in your business, then you will feel like a piece of your puzzle is missing. That feeling of “there is more out there” is a sign that you’re playing small.

Not working to grow and learn.

The purpose of being here is to always be evolving, growing, and trying new things. The universe is in a constant state of expansion, and so are we. If you are not expanding, you are playing small.

Not becoming a better version of yourself.

We are in a constant state of bettering ourselves; becoming the best version of ourselves. If you are not on a path to doing that, you are playing small. You are settling.

Not using your magical superpowers.

If you aren’t using the power of your intuition to grow your business, you are missing out on one of the best and most important parts of being an entrepreneur!

Just going through the motions.

We’ve talked a lot about going on auto-pilot mode. But you’ve got to get out of auto-pilot in order to have success! If you haven’t already, check out my 7-day course to help with that. It’s free!

Staying in your comfort zone.

I get it, where you are right now is comfortable. You’re not putting yourself out there; you’re not taking any risk. Getting out of your comfort zone may feel scary at first, but it will be worth it to move into your full potential.

You’re stuck.

If you’re playing small, it means that you are stuck.

What’s stopping you?

The one, simple explanation for why you’re playing small…FEAR.

There are tons of reasons for your fears, for what keeps you in our comfort zone, for what keeps you from growing and expanding. But in almost every case, the root cause is that you’re afraid.

So, ask yourself: what am I afraid of? Here are some examples…

  • Fear of the unknown
  • Fear that things won’t go well
  • Fear of failure (this episode about failure is a must-listen!)
  • Fear of judgment
  • Fear of looking stupid
  • Fear of looking like a fraud
  • Fear of instability
  • Fear of success (something to really consider!)

Fear is never helpful. It only keeps you from having the impact you want to make in the world. It keeps you distracted from trying to learn everything you can possibly learn about how to do every aspect of your business instead of just stepping out there and going for it! Learning things like how to create an online course, or how to manage social media, etc. can absolutely be helpful, but if you’re tied down by fear, your business simply can’t take off the way you’re hoping, not matter how much you learn.

The bottom line…

If you’re playing small, nothing you do to try to build your business will be effective. There are several ways that fear disguises itself in your business development, and those fears will keep you stuck.

Fear is coming directly from your ego. Your brain has taken in information throughout your lifetime, and not all of it is true (“I’m not capable,” “I’m not smart enough,” etc). But your ego voice is there to continue to support those statements. It wants to make sure that those statements are continuing to be proven right.

Your inner voice, however, will tell you the truth. It will tell you that you’re meant for more, that you’re capable, and that you can achieve your dreams. The problem is that it’s sometimes easier to listen to our ego voice than to our inner voice. Our intuition is always there to tell us the answers to the questions we have. The more we tune in to our inner voice, the less our fears will be able to sideline us. And the more we turn away from fear, the more successful we’ll be.

So how do you stop playing small?

It’s all about awareness. The awareness that you want more. That you’re done playing small. That you’re done getting in your own way. That you want to live up to your full potential.

This requires recognizing that your fears aren’t real, and that your passions, dreams, and potential are stronger than your fears. Fear can be paralyzing, but once you call it out and see it for what it really is, you are able to truly realize that your passions are stronger. You can choose differently. Building your awareness around your fears and then doing the work to go the other way will change everything.

A helpful tool…

When you feel a fearful statement coming to mind, turn it into a statement that is rooted in love, positivity, and success. For example, if you think “I don’t want to be judged,” change the statement to “by putting myself out there, I’m able to help more people.”

Making that shift won’t always feel natural, and you may not even believe your positive statement at first. But, with consistency, you will start creating holes in that ego voice, and letting the truth of your inner voice come in. You are programming your brain to believe the truth.

How To Get Out of a Funk

Today I want to talk about how to get out of a funk. Those funks. We all have them; we all know them. No one is immune to them. We need to talk about this now because I think a lot of us have been in more funks than usual these days. Either because you’re stuck at home with your kids all day, or because you’re working overtime, or maybe because you’re feeling isolated from your family and friends. There are soooooo many reasons to be in a funk right now.

So what is a funk?

A funk is a bad mood, a slump, just feeling blah, icky, burned out, stressed, sad, mad, frustrated, bored, and/or anxious. 

Clearly, funks are riddled with negative emotions and low vibes. And I think one common theme with funks is that a lot of times we don’t even know why we’re in one! There may not have been one thing that got us down; it just kinda came on either through a series of things, or from something we didn’t think would affect us, so it’s not even in our awareness. Sometimes we just wake up in a funk… Ya know, a wrong-side-of-the-bed kind of deal.

Also, funks tend to drag on. They really can hang with us for longer than the initial “thing” that spurred the bad mood. They can last for days or weeks. 

So that’s what I think of as a funk – an extended bad mood without any definitive cause.

Is it wrong to be in a funk?

Now I’d like to make it very, very clear that there is NOTHING wrong with being in a funk. As I said, we have all had them and we all will have them. It doesn’t make you a bad person, a low-vibe person, or someone who is doomed to never manifest what they want. 

Funks are normal and okay, and actually they can be a really good thing for your vibration — when you practice what we’re going to chat about today. There are actually a ton of benefit to exploring your emotions… ALL emotions

Before we move on, let me address one more thing: if your funk doesn’t let up and is affecting your sleep, work, relationship, or self-care, please seek professional medical attention.

To me, this says you can still be the light even when there is some darkness around you. 

You can still be going with the current of life even when there are bumps along the way.

The important thing here is that funks don’t make you turn and start forcing your way upstream, going against the current of life… that you don’t start living within those bad moods… that they don’t start dictating your life.

How to Get Out of a Funk

And this is why I want to provide some steps to get you out of a funk. Not because you shouldn’t ever be in one, but because we don’t want one taking over. Instead we want to learn and grow from a funk and come out even better on the other side!

1. Acknowledgement

Acknowledge that you’re in a funk, and that you’re allowing it into your life. This is where it actually will raise your vibration to be in a funk, because you can use it as a means to get to know yourself better and dig into your feelings instead of shying away from them.

Pretending you’re fine when you’re not, or trying to force a feeling when you really feel the opposite will keep you in a low vibe. And that can also last much longer than just staying in tune with yourself, staying curious and open to your emotions, and letting yourself express what you need. You don’t even need to know why you feel what you do, you just need to know that you feel the way you do and honor it.

2. Awareness

Can you learn more about what you need? There’s a reason why you’re feeling a negative emotion. It’s because your body, mind, and soul need something.  What is that thing? Discover what it is, and then do it! Is it more sleep? A hug? A good conversation? Some alone time? Some connection (virtual)? A way to be creative with a new hobby or project? Some fresh air? Some exercise? A good cry or a good laugh? Digging into your need is just another way to continue building that connection with yourself, which, again, is a very high-vibe thing to do! Honoring your needs?! Yes, please! 

3. If you don’t know what it is you need, take some fool-proof action.

Here are five go-to action steps that are guaranteed to make a difference in how you feel:

  • Meditate – take some time for quiet mindfulness.
  • Appreciate – make a gratitude list to gain perspective.
  • Move – get your body moving and call up those endorphins.
  • Air – get outside for some deep breaths of fresh air.
  • Sleep – take a nap or go to bed early.

4. Disconnect from digital life and re-connect with your real life.

Social media, TV, movies… They may be our go-to when we want to disconnect from what’s going on with us and lose ourselves in something else, BUT, quite often other people’s lives fuel our own negativity, even without us knowing it. Feelings of comparison, competition, lack, low self-esteem, low self-worth, etc, simply are not helpful.

Instead, reconnect with the good in YOUR life. Call up a real friend; check on a real neighbor.

5. Random Acts of Kindness

Never underestimate how much generosity and kindness can impact your own vibe.

6. Crystals

Many crystals are known to absorb negative energy, either external or internal. If you’re feeling a negative emotion, you can use these crystals to protect you from outside vibes, while also transmuting your own negative energy into a more positive place. How cool!

7. Let go and trust.

What thought, feeling, or action can you let go of? Where can you find more trust with your universal plan?

Next time you’re in a funk, say this out loud:

“I’m in a funk, and right now I need _______.”
